Swimwear in the rain

_MG_6033-Edit

Being a model is often seen as a highly glamorous job by many, however, for some shoots this really isn't true. When I shot a summer swimwear fashion story for Living South magazine we were hoping for bright sunshine and good vibes. In reality our model Jessica had to stand in the cold rain pretending that it was beautiful and sunny when she probably would rather have sat by warm fire in the pub.

If it had been sunny this would have been such a fun shoot, a great location, a great model, and a great team. With the dark skies and heavy rain it ended up being a good challenge instead. I did my best to make it look sunny even thought the rain was falling hard and in the end of the day it turned out looking good, although poor Jessica did have to shiver a bit to get the job done.

Dolly Rock Boutique

The Green August 2012 - Cover

It is always good to do more than expected. Typically when I am given a brief for a job the brief sounds interesting but I also have my own (often a little bit more crazy) ideas about how to tell the visual story. The brief to shoot a new boutique in St Margarets, London, asked for me to photograph some portraits of the owners showing the great interiors of their shop. So I went ahead and made some location portraits trying to capture the feeling of the space and show the owners' infectious personalities.

However, as is often the case just fulfilling the brief does not quite satisfy me, I don't feel like I've really given my all to a brief unless I've tried to tell the story in my own way and not just the way I was asked to. In this case I realised that the two friends who run the boutique Beth and Nikki are what make it special. It is their drive and passion for fashion and makes the place tick. So how could I show this in a simple, interesting and attention grabbing way? I decided to place them on the floor and surround them with clothes hangers - a great symbol of fashion.

As so often is the case when I do my own little extra bit it goes down great with the client. The magazine editor loved the pictures, and put my hangers image on the cover. The boutique owners also loved the images and have asked to buy them for promotional usage. Doing that little bit extra and letting your creativity speak can really help get your best work out their.

Dog Squad - People and Animals

Adam and Craig - 4221

It is unusual to meet your subjects for a portrait shoot at 10.30pm. But that is exactly what I did a few weeks ago when I headed off to photograph two police officers and their dogs for my People and Animals project.

Adam and Craig both work in the antiterrorism unit for the British Transport Police. Their dogs are trained to smell bombs and explosives and they can often be found patrolling airports, railways stations, and other similar places. For such a late shoot Craig had rather a lot of energy, constantly taking the piss out of how long I was taking whilst I ran around trying to set everything up without an assistant. Adam on the other had was a lot more chilled. We had to shoot so late because it was the only time we could get access to the station without being in the way of the passengers and general public. It was very strange being in such a typically busy place in total quiet.
